7/25/07: New & Improved Consumers
If you could buy your soul, how much would you pay? How much time would you spend looking for a place to buy it? How far would you drive to get it?
How much would you pay for a new pair of shoes? A new TV? A new car?
How much time do you spend researching which of the newest gadgets to buy? How far do you drive to get just the right object that you want?
We have become mass consumers relentlessly distracting ourselves with “new and improved” materialism, spending considerable amounts of time, energy and money to buy this and buy that all the while spending little to no time discovering our very being.
We have become disconnected from ourselves, empty and alone, yet surrounded by objects and “stuff”. In our desperate attempts to feel better, we try to fill the emptiness with yet more objects and more stuff, further removing ourselves from ourselves.
We think buying this or that will make us feel better, smarter, prettier, more popular, admired, complete, whole, happier, etc.
How often do you pull out your wallet to buy something to fill you up?
Next time you pull out your wallet, stop and observe your thoughts and emotions. Go beyond the surface, dig deeper into the root of your intentions.
The truth is nothing you can buy with money will fill your soul. Your soul is already filled, you don't need to buy or do anything to add to it. You simply need to acknowledge it. Spend time with it, nurturing and listening to it. Use your imagination, build it, explore it, strengthen it by daydreaming and visualizing. Create a piece of art, sing, dance, play, laugh.
Feeding your soul is free. It costs nothing and has no dollar value. So save a little money and rediscover yourself.
