7/2/07: Find What Is Working Not What Isn’t
We tend to take an area of our lives that isn’t working and focus on it, spending our time talking about it, thinking about it and otherwise giving it so much attention that it is no wonder it does not get better.
We base the quality of our day on the one area that is not working as opposed to any one area that is working. When people ask us how we’re doing, we reply, “Not so good, my back really hurts today.”
Rarely do we reply with a focus on any other area or areas that are working. Even while our back hurts, we could shift our focus to an area that is working in our lives and respond accordingly, “Great! My knees feel wonderful!” or “Good! I have a beautiful home!”
Pick an area of your life that is working and focus on it. Or pick a part of yourself that is good and focus on it. Feel the positive energy from it. Find as many areas as you can and then find more. Keep your focus stayed on these things, base your day on these things, talk and think about these things.
By focusing on what works, you are not denying what doesn’t work any more than by focusing on what doesn’t work, you are denying what does.
For example, if you have a bad back and you focus on it, you are not denying that you also have 10 fully functional fingers and toes, 2 good knees, 1 great job, 3 loving friends, etc. You are simply not paying any attention to them. It’s not a denial; it’s merely a lack of acknowledgment, attention and focus.
In other words, you don’t have to deny your bad back, you just don’t have to focus on it.
The more focus you place on the areas that are working, the areas that aren’t will transform to match those that are. It really is all about your focus.
