5/21/05: Character
There are three major clues that
reveal a person’s
character.
The first clue is in how they
handle problems. When life throws them a challenge, do
they moan and groan, complaining
of why things always happen to them? Or do they simply accept
the challenge and move forward to overcome it? Whether the
problem is large or small, the way we deal with anything
is the way we deal with everything. It takes strength of
character to accept life’s challenges with open arms
and integrate them into our lives.
The second clue is in how they treat others, especially
ones who have hurt them. Do they treat everyone, no matter
who it is, with courtesy, respect and compassion? Or do they
belittle others, lie and lash out in anger? When we have
been hurt by another, we are at our most vulnerable. In the
throes of our pain, we want to lash out and hurt the other.
It takes strength of character to step outside of our pain
long enough to recognize we are dealing with another human
being, one who may also be hurt.
The third clue is in how they live and work. Do they blame
others for their inability to get ahead, justify less than
efficient work habits with lack of appreciation and do just
enough to get by? Or do they go the extra mile, claim full
responsibility for their lot in life and constantly strive
to better themselves, in the workplace and at home? It takes
strength of character to hold oneself fully accountable and
maintain consistent growth and expansion.
