5/13/05:
Are you still afraid of monsters?
All children at one time or another are afraid of monsters.
And all parents know they have nothing to be afraid of. But
no matter how hard they try to convince their children that
there is no such thing as monsters, the children never believe
them. So parents look under the bed, in the closet, anywhere
the imaginary monster might be hiding to prove to the child
it is safe to go to sleep. Eventually, when enough convincing
has been done, the child agrees to go to sleep and the parents
leave. Though we know they may be scared, we feel safe for
them, with full confidence that there is no such thing as
monsters.
But does the child really believe it is safe? Or do they
go to bed with yet a little doubt and fear, shielding themselves
under the safety of their blanket? If a noise is heard, do
they not shiver under the blanket, afraid to peek out?
To children, this fear is very
real. Monsters are very real. No matter what their parents
or anyone tells them, they KNOW
monsters exist. Didn’t you, when you were a child?
And what are your fears now? Are they, too, self-induced
and unsubstantiated?
We never got over our fear of monsters. We simply changed
our idea of monsters. They are no longer big creepy green
creatures, instead, they have taken the form of lack and
disease.
What if someone came and told you there is no such thing
as lack, poverty, disease or failure? Would you believe them?
Like the child who sees monster fingers in the shadows of
a tree limb, what you are seeing when you think you see lack
and illness are merely shadows playing tricks on your eyes.
You shiver under your blanket of life, afraid to peek out,
in fear of what you believe is out there.
But rest assured, though you may be scared, your creator
feels safe for you, with full confidence that there is no
such thing as monsters, in any form.
